ACT Priority Weeds - please report!

Posted by ACTBioSecurity

Overview

The following weed and pest species pose significant threat to ACT's plants, animals and fungi. They are capable of invading and degrading native ecosystems. They are yet to become well established either in ACT as a whole or in particular parts of the Territory. Early detection of new outbreaks will help us eradicate these plants or pests from the ACT or key habitats.

The list of sixty species is comprised of two groups of species. They include those listed in the  Alert List of Alien Plant Species in the ACT (Downey and Taylor 2022) and which have been recorded in the vicinity of the ACT or there are just one or a few ACT locations. Reporting and controlling any infestations will help keep ACT free of these invasive species or keep their impact to a low level.

The second group of species are those from the List of Naturalised Alien Plant Species in the ACT (Downey and Taylor 2022) that are considered to be an extreme or very high environmental risk. Some of these species are known from only a few locations and there is a hope that they can be eradicated from the Territorry. Other plants such as Privet and Lovegrass are already widespread, but new infestations remote from any others of that species will be given a high priority to control.

We need your help to find all these species and to report them while control can be effective. You may have some in your garden and you are encouraged to remove these invasive timebombs.
