Chee-Jen Chen (Morphological and molecular studies in the genus Tremella, J. Cramer, 1998 - page 110) says that most mycologists consider Tremella foliacea to be a very variable species. He , especially with respect to the colour of the basidiocarps". He notes four features that differentiate the foliacea group for other species of Tremella but three of the four are microscopic. The one naked-eye feature is the "brownish to reddish brown, conspicuously foliose" fruit body.
Consequently I will use 'Tremella foliacea group' as the label for any gelatinous fungus with a brown, markedly lobed fruit body.
