User's notes

Apologies for a long description, but I've been working on this for a while. Part of the reason for my posting is that these shrubs, planted ca 15 years ago, are in the firing line for future widening of Drake Brockman Drive. This Euc is not common in the region so I'd like to be sure of its ID. Also there are no images in CNM. I trawled through ID resources and eventually chose the Euclid ID key to convince me. Euclid offers 934 Eucalypt options for Australia. I entered the following characters which are mostly shown in my images: Leaf petiole 0.8 cm Leaf blade shape falcate Leaf side veins parallel 7-15 flower buds/umbel Flower bud shape fusiform to pyriform Operculum scar absent Fruit pedicel length 0.1 cm These characters cut options down to 3:- E lacrimans, E radiata ssp robertsonii and E moorei ssp moorei A few more answers to Lucid gave me the ID: Habit mallee or shrub Fruit shape truncate - globose Fruit 0.5cm long, 0.5 cm wide Leaf sheen glossy This is backed up by bud width 0.25cm, not in key but in species description.

With bark like that there is no way it is either E.radiata or E.lacrimans which are quite distinctive trees in the field. The closest thing that might be around in Canberra to this aside from (E.moorei of course) is E.elata but it clearly isn't that with the buds arranged as they are. Nice ID.

In terms of conservation value I would say probably very little, E.moorei is actually native to the ACT (I know of stands on Orroral and Mavis ridges, though have yet to visit myself) but as far as we know it is confined to the mountains. Planted specimens like this one are of the same value as any planted Eucalypt.

Request CNM specify ssp moorei in our index - highly unlikely to have the North Coast ssp serpentenicola grow in this frosty region?

Yes, we can add that. But you might be surprised at what can grow in Canberra, even species that are way out of normal range.
