I have no idea what this is. I have seen them a few times, but they are very quick to hide so I've never had a good view.

Thank you both for solving that little mystery. I have just read that Staphylinidae (rove beetles) is the largest family in the animal kingdom with over 65,000 species, so CNM has a few species to go!

I knew about tachyporines when I was beetling in England in my youth.
Interestingly, the expert on Australian staphs is Al Newton from Illinois who has been very helpful identifying stuff for me from photos, although I think he would need specimens for tachyporines. I was put on to him by John Lawrence, author of Australian Beetles and a contemorary of mine at CSIRO. I have sent a picture of Tachyporines on flowers separately.
