Hi Mike, interesting observation, but I can't ID the ant, sorry - it could be a few, including Doleromyrma and Tapinoma. Regarding the carton, you could be right that the ants built it, but it looks too big and coarse to have been built by these small ants - maybe they just took it over from whatever built it when it was abandoned? I photographed the scale Melanococcus albizziae (Acacia Mealybug) on 11 March so this carton has been built up in the last week. The plant is in a tabletop garden and these are the only ants I have noticed.
