Two ants checking each other out. I had assumed both were R. metallica, which is common in the area, but on the bigger screen, they look different. Are these different castes, or even different species?

Hi Cath, I think you are probably right that they are Rhytidoponera metallica. They are probably the same species - size does vary a fair bit in some ants. The only reason I have not called it R. metallica is that I can't see the last segment of the gaster very well, so can't rule out R. aspera. Cheers, Jon
