Thanks Matt, I thought it may have been B. montanus, but I thought they were supposed to be later flowering (Oct-Dec according to the orchid field guides). I still haven't got my eye in to distinguish the difference between the labellums.
Hi Rob David Jones in his 2008 ACT Field Guide suggested this early flowering species in that area, which he described as a variant, may be an undescribed species, but it would appear little work has been done on this since, and leaving few options. At that time he talked about September as being early but these started flowering weeks ago. All very interesting.
The difference in the labellums is that montanus has quite a broad labellum whereas umbrinus has a more narrow and slender labellum. Another feature to look for is the ‘pinch’ in the end of the lateral sepals which is often visible in montanus. See Bunochilus montanus (ACT) = Pterostylis jonesii (NSW) (Montane Leafy Greenhood) I believe the undescribed species is similar to montanus, but has a boxier labellum and flowers earlier.
