H. assaulta is widespread across northern Australia; all records in the Matthews book are from north of the Qld border except a few from northern NSW. Of course it could fly further south, but I don't think there is evidence in the photo to differentiate it from Helicoverpa armigera. The give-away for H. assaulta is strong dark lines along the veins, particularly but not only the hindwing - see https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/observations/42822446. (I suspect some of the iNat H. assaulta are armigera.)

H. punctigera is usually much plainer. If it's not H. amigera, I think the next option would be Australothis rubrescens
