User's notes

Unsure whether Myrmecia Simillima or Pyriformis. Also unsure whether queen or worker, observed in humid warm weather post rains. Very timid in disposition and quite large, closer to 30mm.

Hi TahniChan, good identification. Myrmecia pyriformis and Myrmecia simillima can be very similar, but the shape of the mandibles allows you to tell them apart. In M. simillima, the shaft of the mandible is pretty evenly wide along its length back towards the head, while in M. pyriformis the mandible has a wider area about two thirds back towards the head before becoming narrower again as it joins the head. Cheers, Jon
