MichaelB, I finally got around to taking specimens of this to the herbarium where Dave Albrecht identified it as Juncus prismatocarpus. If I could figure out how to add an extra image to a confirmed sighting I can show a character that enables it to be distinguished from Juncus bufonius. Ken
Thanks Michael extra image added. If you look at that image you will see faint partial cross walls in several of the leaves. Juncus bufonius doesn't have any cross walls and in several other species the cross walls go all the way across. This was something I missed in the field but the feature becomes more visible on dried specimens under the stereo microscope. I initially collected these because of the rust fungus that can also be seen in the final image still working on that one.
