tiny hard black egg-like growths on gum log

I think this is a fungus fruiting body - Heino has provided interesting back-ground material which you can access by clicking on the suggested name

Michael, great thanks, that did not even occur to me. The black things were tiny, round, very hard, tightly packed together and all the same size.

Annulohypoxylon is a possibility but so are Hypoxylon and perhaps Rosellinia.
