Maybe a juvenile eucalyptus. Did the leaves smell when you rubbed them in your fingers? However, there are about 159 species of Eucalyptus and Angophora in NSW which have narrow pointed juvenile leaves. Someone might be able to get hold of a planting list for the area so you could narrow it down.
