User's notes

Square Rock Track. Approximately 200+ plants. Only one in flower with many others growing long stems and starting to fruit. Is this why they are called bird orchids?

They grow long stems after fertilization to aid seed dispersal. They are called bird orchids because of the mobile labellum which gives the impression of a young bird's gaping mouth.

Ah. That's pretty cool. It makes sense. I thought they might have been called bird orchids because the fruiting bodies appear rather bird like.
