Significant sighting

This is a major new colony of this orchid whose world distribution is restricted to the Majura Valley, and makes Mt Ainslie as an important habitat as Mt Majura - Waltraud you will just have to find more if Mt Majura is to stay number one.

Congratulations Tobias. This is a hugely significant find for both Mount Ainslie and the species as a whole. Michael M / Tony - we need to mark this sighting as a Significant Sighting as being the largest colony on Mt Ainslie and also potentially the number 1 or 2 colony for the species. Keep us posted on your honours research project Tobias.

A new colony? Wow. I had a look at northern Mt Ainslie the other day and decided that area was terrible orchid habitat. I then found out I was moving through a very disturbed area onto Mt Ainslie.

Michael, I don't care whether Mt Majura or Mt Ainslie is "number one" in terms of Canberra Spider orchid habitat as I always considered the 2 mountains' geology and ecology as an entity. I always thought that will be a question of time and looking closely to discover new colonies particularly after Silke found the new colony on a somehow unusual spot last year. Great find Tobias! I'm not sure how the dedicated orchid mob do it! It seems they spot a Spider orchid hair from a distance of 100m away...
