User's notes

Single specimen on this property - looks like a remnant from a wetter past. Growing out of a termite mound in low area. In bud in Oct flowers abt Dec. Will post a follow up photo when it flowers. Habit of l. obovatum, but leaf has a point. Not L. contentinale which occurs elsewhere on the property. L.myrtifolium is also a possibility - but doesn't have the red stems and has green rather than grey leaves. Flowered in December.

The leaves and nuts are the right shape for polygalifolium. However, it would be better to take a specimen for ID at the Australian National Herbarium in Canberra. Tgis species is uncommon on the tablelands. Wait till it flowers and leave at least one nut on the specimen when you press it. We found that about 5 sheets of tabloid size newspaper on each side was fine. If you do not have a plant press a large heavy book is OK for pressing. Though it is a good idea to use newspaper as well to stop any stains on the book.

Identified by Dave Albrecht (NCMI, Black Mountain) as Leptospermum polygalifolium subsp polygalifolium with the following comment . It appears to be closest to Leptospermum polygalifolium subsp. polygalifolium, however the location and habitat are unexpected. This species typically occurs in heathland or heathy forests on sandy or rocky sites further to the east of Gundaroo. Being a single plant out of habitat he considered there was a remote chance that it could be a hybrid. Two Leptospermum species on the property -Leptspermum multicaule – L.continentale. He considered a cross between these two would look a bit different to the specimen supplied.
