These photos aren't very good. I was told they were most likely of Pterostylis cycnocephala, (now Hymenochilus cycnocephalus I believe). Is that a good choice?

There are several Hymenochilus that superficially look very similar. It may well be H. cycnocephalus, but need to see the appendage at the base of the labellum for a positive id.

Since there are quite a lot of these orchids around here, and very few of us have the detailed knowledge to be able to identify them, how can we correctly report them? Is it possible to simply have "Hymenochilus species" as an entry on the species list?

Hi Michael, let me have a think about this one. It's a good question, as I'm sure the ACT Gov and ALA would indeed be interested in knowing that the broad species exists, even though we don't have enough info to make a fully accurate ID.

There is a precedent set from your own species lists ….. see Austrodanthonia spp. (Wallaby Grasses), Dichelachne spp. (Plume Grasses) and Lomandra sp. (Matrush).

Aaron perhaps we can add Hymenochilus sp. to the list of plants occurring on Rob Roy and leave it at that until some-one is able to make a positive ID or send in a photo with the distinguishing features
