Anthrenus verbasci (Varied or Variegated Carpet Beetle)

A cosmopolitan species of uncertain geographic origin. The short, stout larvae, which are covered in long bristles, consume practically any dried material of animal origin, such as wool, felt, dried meat and dead insects. Infestations can destroy carpets and (notoriously among insect collectors) insect collections. The adult beetles congregate on flowers where they feed on pollen and/or nectar.
