Probably the worst photograph ever submitted to NatureMapr. This was a quick flash shot taken in the dark, which successfully frightened the moth away, so it is all I have.
An amazing photo. We have had many worse than that. Forewings look good for H. scrofa, but hindwings orange rather than red? Maybe a trick of the lighting ? Many other Sphingidae species have orange hindwings.
Thank you for your kind comments regarding my very poor photograph. I can't comment on the how colour appeared to the naked eye as the photograph was taken in near total darkness, if it had not been for the buzzing I probably would not have known the moth was there. However I know camera I am sure it was more likely to have been orange rather than red. Before posting I looked at the reported H. scrofa sightings and thought this one looked similar, Hippotion scrofa (Coprosma Hawk Moth) , but I was probably being a bit over enthusiastic.
