Most of the mushrooms fell into two distinct groups, either immature (as in the first two photos) or decrepit (as in the third photo). The 4th and 5th photos show the only mature and not-yet-totally-decrepit specimen that I could find. The aim of the second photo is to show some immature specimens at several stages of development and you see no veil in even the smallest (only a millimetre or so tall). Species of Parasola lack a veil. In Coprinellus or Coprinopsis a veil may be present and evidence of this may persist in the mature mushroom – but in some cases all traces may disappear or be very hard to find. Hence, there is a benefit in seeing these inkcaps at both immature and mature stages.
