Vicflora suggests presence of lateral roots (which we can't use here), and whether or not fronds are regularly branched (if so A.pinnata). I though personally that A.pinnata formed nice little triangles (Azolla pinnata (Ferny Azolla)), while A.rubra was more haphazard as with this plant.
