Significant sighting

Tapirlord noted:

14 Nov 2022

First CNM record of this species which comes from a genus of Grasses that are particularly difficult to ID. When taking sightings of Rytidosperma please include photos of both sides of the individual seeds as I have done here. Also note Graeme's commentary which I have included below.

Will seek commentary from Alan Bedggood

What a poor specimen! It's months old and badly damaged. Tatty old florets like that usually become grey-brown but in this case, the brownishness is a distinctive feature of the species. The broad lemmas with rapidly-contracting lobes are also hallmarks of R. duttonianum.

The identity would have been more obvious if the whole panicle had been photographed, particularly the distinctive long lowest branch (or two) with spikelets confined to the upper (distal) two-thirds. I presume the plant was growing in a winter-wet spot, perhaps holding water for days or weeks at a time.

Commentary and ID curtesy of Graeme Lorimer. @abread111 @waltraud hoping this will be of interest to both of you. There aren't too many people more qualifed to ID these grasses, even among herbarium botanists.
