Wow! That changes my interpretation of some TNR history. About 5-10 years ago, within a year or two after TNR got Southern Brown Bandicoots, a bandicoot was caught in a fox trap some distance from the bandicoot enclosure, and released by the ranger doing the fox trapping without any photo being taken. The ranger assumed that bandicoots were escaping from the enclosure. The ranger was so embarrassed that the event was not reported officially. Further bandicoot sightings in poor viewing conditions reinforced the assumption and led to fence upgrades. However this 2022 record suggests the alternative possibility that there were wild LNB at TNR, as well as, or instead of, escaped SBBs.

Maybe there is a new enclosure down in the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve extension referred to as Jedbinbilla? If not, the location on CNM may need correction as it is far from the normal TNR enclosures.

I will get the Tid staff to confirm the location.

Hi Don, Jedbinbilla refers to the new safe haven being built for BTRWs at TNR - you might know it as 'block 60' - the old pine plantation - you'd never know it now. it isn't anywhere near the other enclosures - as the bandicoot runs :) . so there may well have been LNP mistaken for SBB in the past - that said, I am sure some of our SBB have released themselves - there have been opportunities for sure. we'll never know. but it's fantastic that they are here!
