Hi Mike, other than the photos, do you have a reason to think that the ant is P. nitidus rather than the other, undescribed species? From the photos I couldn't tell, so would probably ID it simply as Papyrius sp. Cheers, Jon
Hi Jon, site was recorded as P. nitidus back in 2018 before the undescribed species was identified. I don't know how to tell the difference. Best to make it Papyrius sp. Are you planning to investigate colonies to determine the species or can you do it if I can get better photos?
Hi Mike, with close photos taken in good light it’s possible to see the hairs on the undescribed species, but they are hard photos to get. With a hand lens it is also possible once you know what you are looking for. Once I can get into CBR (after the lockdown is lifted in CBR and I can leave my home on the Yass valley) I am going to do a fair bit of collecting from known sites so I can do proper IDs. So, for now, it will have to be Papyrius sp. cheers , Jon
