User's notes

Curly leaves and straight ones - the culms? Some sheath bases tinged red. There is a ligule. Occurs at this site as old tussocks with dead greyish bases of old growth. At a damp site under the power line. Have not seen any scabrid leaf edges but it does feel a little rough to the touch. Need to wait for flowering to occur to confirm id.

Barb best to dig out a sample for id - perhaps wait for flowering stems to develop.

Yes, I have a sample now, but agree I need to wait for flowering.

okay. Isobel might be able to id once you collected a flowering stem.

I now think this is red-anther wallaby grass at a young stage - look at the ligule. When I went back there I could not find any Carex but there was red-anther wallaby grass and I have seen curly leaves on that species elsewhere.

I still believe this to be Carex, however I don’t doubt that there is red-anther wallaby grass in the area.

I'll keep looking intermittently. The Carex bichenoviana description does not mention hairs for the ligule and the red anther wallaby grass does.

Yes, but there is an awful lot of in between with regard to those two taxa (the entire order poales). I would almost suggest that both species are present in the photo.

Maybe so, Ciaran, I'll keep looking.
