A Lasicampidae species. Not many of the larvae are known in this family. Can you take it into protective custody and rear it to the adult moth for identification of the species ?

It was in the same spot today so I have it in captivity - hopefully it eats the eucalypt leaves I brought with it if it's hungry

Have had the caterpillar in a mesh bug house, and I found the cocoon in the leaf litter I collected with the caterpillar on 31 December 2020. I've added the photos of the cocoon to this record.

I didn't but it was obvious which caterpillar made which cocoon as there was a week long period before the second caterpillar made its cocoon. I'll separate them now to make sure I get the moths right.

Hi Don, how long does it take for the metamorphosis? I'd given up hope on this one but I just checked and the pupa still moves.

Lasiocampidae are often, but not necessarily annual in life cyclce, often emerging in autumn.

Judging by the different arrangement of hairs, and the presence/absence of the orange mark behind the thorax, it looks like you have photos of 2 different caterpillars, of 2 different species of Lasicampidae? Or is the one with the orange mark visible in 'display' mode? That really needs a lateral shot showing if the head is curled under to make the display.

The one with the orange mark is the same animal in display mode after I touched it

Excellent. The larvae of each of the 12 different Australian genera in Lasiocampidae may show different coloured bands in display mode. although we only have 3 examples so far : Entometa show blue, Pararguda show black, and Pinara orange. It will be interesting to find out if yours is a Pinara species.

I had given up hope that this moth was going to pupate after first bringing the caterpillar into captivity over a year ago. On 4 January 2022 I went to clean out the container I had been keeping it in only to discover that she had pupated (not sure when) and laid eggs! @donhe & @GlennCocking
