This appeared about 6 month ago (second photo is from early Dec 2018 when I first spotted the scar). Does anybody know if it's made by the local indigenous people?
Hi Silke You might like to contact Samantha Ning. She is a ranger and the Tree Protection Officer with the ACT Government. She also works with the Ngunnawal people with regard to scar trees.
Over the past half year or so the Fire unit cut a lot of branches and also wattles etc that were overhanging / too close to tracks particularly fire and maintenance tracks. Perhaps this was part of the operation? I'd suggest to checking whether timber was cut in the vicinity along tracks etc; also PCS rangers should know whether the Fire unit was working in that area.
I've contacted Samantha Ning, the ACT Tree Protection Officer and she has talked to the Aboriginal Liaison Officer. They say it's a newly scarred tree, quite well done and would have been done to make a shield or a Coolamon but they aren't sure who did it. There is now discussion on how to protect these new artefacts.
