The tall Gastrodias with crowded flowers in the montane regions of the ACT are now considered to be G procera. G sesamoides is thought to occur occasionally around Canberra itself, and is shorter and less robust, with pale, stubby flowers.

When I bumped into Cath today she was saying that G. surcula is now considered to be G. procera. Does that mean G. surcula is no longer regarded as a separate species?

No, just that it can’t be identified from photos.

Hey Matt. G surcula is still considered to be a separate species, however it appears quite uncommon locally and is quite difficult to tell apart from G procera. Cath and I were talking about this with Mark today, perhaps she meant to say G entomogama is now considered to be G procera?

So G. entomogama is no longer regarded as a separate species? But they all look so similar! Let's all throw phylogeny out the window, call them all Gastrodia potatoeoides, call it a day and head to the pub!

Haha I don't disagree with you there Matt! Yeah, there is a synopsis of Gastrodia and related genera in the latest Australian Orchid Review, I'm not sure whether it explicitly talks about G entomogama being put into G procera, but G entomogama doesn't feature any more.
