Variable Cutworm is a good name for this species, mainly the Variable part. I've reported this species three times, and they all look quite different !

Yes, several species within Noctuidea seem to quite variable in colouring and the intensity of their markings, including the ubiquitous Bogong Moth, A. infusa.
