Ceratopogonidae (family)

Biting Midge

Adults: tiny (1-3mm) flies, females biting vertebrates for a blood meal. 

Larvae: stiff, snake-like in shape, up to 10mm long; pointed head; air-breathing but common in wetlands, still water and river edges
