User's notes

I rescued this thread (about 7cm) from the Pseudomantis albofimbriata and put it in a jar meaning to photograph properly the next morning and forgot about it. Last night I noticed minute larvae so I am guessing they belong to the moth being eaten by the mantid. If the id is right, according to LBH, the eggs should have beens in a pile of about 20, and covered with brown hairs. Perhaps the mantid unrolled the clump or the moth didn't have time to form the clump. Or the thread of effs and the dead moth might not be related.

Very interesting. This caterpillas looks different to the other caterpillars under Euproctis baliolalis but it is so little that it is hard to tell what it will look like when it's older. Is it still alive? Do you have any later photos of it?

Doesn't seem to match this one https://canberra.naturemapr.org/sightings/4648940. Mine escaped whilst still 1st instar and I found dead ones on the bench. One remaining in the jar appears to have moulted at least once but looks dead now. Photos added

Too few Euproctis larvae have been reared and the instars documented. For now, it is simpler to lump them together until more studies allow better identification.
