The Amegillas most people are familiar with are also known as blue bandeds and they have very distinct blue /cream / white bands across the abdomen. There are other amegillas eg bombiformis (teddy bear) that don't have stripes but this one isn't an amegilla. Another freature of Amegillas is you can hear them buzzing before you see them - often louder than Apis mellifera. Look up buzz pollination if you would like to know more.

Thanks Dianne, very helpful. I heard no buzzing. The insect world is fascinating but I fear I have left it a bit late to digest enough of the info out there to be useful. So much I don't know.
