There are at least 16 spp of Carposina (genus) shown by the ALA and iNaturalist, several quite distinguishable. 'Moths in the ACT. says there are 20 named Australian Caposina spp., see p. 133. plus I quote: 'Carposinia petraea (not illustrated) and this unnamed species (illustrated) have been recorded regularly at Black Mt and in the Brindabella range over the years, and now the unnamed spcies is being found in Canberra backyards, Both species fly in spring and early summer.' Ideally then I think that locally in Canberra we should check for the unnamed species (hence the category in the taxonomy) , then C. petraea and then for other named species against known species ID'ed elsewhere. Judging by iNaturalist, C latebrosa and C. taractis numerically dominate the sightings in se and E. Australia. iNaturalist does not show any C, petraea observations. The ALA shows one C, petraea sighting via NatureMapr for the South Coast region collected by Glenn Cocking.
I agree the side-on photo of 'Carposina undescribed species' in Moths in the ACT is hard to use a guide for identifying that species from photos posted, But we might seek guidance on that from G. Cocking et al. I just think we ought to keep the taxonomic categories we already have, Uncertain moths as named species can be placed in 'Carposinia (genus)',
