30cm to a metre sounds a bit tall for S.nigrum, I've only been to that area once before but I recall S.chenopodioides during that visit.

Yes, the patch was unusually tall. I thought it was due to the wet summer.

Right, so went and keyed this and it's definitely Solanum chenopodioides. Stems are hairy (sparesly hairy or glabrous in S.nigrum), leaves are narrower and adult leaves are entire, the habitat (streamside) also favour S.chenopodioides which likes wetter enviroments.
