Often find a male sitting in this exact spot. Looks like there's a couple (3?) Younger birds? Faint red on one if their crests. Two pairs snuggling quite close to one another. Preening
Thanks - Of the 20 pairs that we have located in Canberra - only one has fledged (two female chicks) and most are weeks away. We know that chicks from the previous season may return to the nest site with adults but usually they have split up by now. We also know, from observing fledgling birds that feather development is highly variable and not a good character to age birds. Thus I have no idea what is the actual case but these birds could be
1. Pairs that have recently raised fledged chicks and we have missed the nests (which would probably be within a few kilometres)
2. Pairs from last year with chicks still in tow
3. A group of young birds
Do your observations support or debunk any of these?
Actually on closer inspection the red topped grey birds may be older females who may develop a bit of a red crest with old age (so 4 possible options). They could be a group of non-breeding birds
