This is the only ACT record to date of Isoodon obesulus (Southern Brown Bandicoot) of local wild origin. Now there are captive I. obesulus in 'The Sanctuary' at Tidbinbilla with potential to escape into the wild, but this occurrence predates the existence of that collection.
User's notes
Two left dentaries were found with other regurgitated eagle pellet material below the Rob Roy WTE nest by raptor PhD student Esteban Fuentes. They were found a few days after the 2003 bush fire. One dentary still retained red muscle fibres. Both are now in the ANWC collection. At that time there were no captive collections of Bandicoots in the ACT, because the former CSIRO collection of I. macroura had long gone, as had the Mugga Lane Zoo. And the Tidbinbilla collection of I. obesulus had not commenced. So these two animals came from a wild population.
Initially some confusion arose because the eagle nest location had been falsified to protect it. The nest location given here is closer to the real 'Rob Roy WTE nest' but still only approximately correct. This is not important because the nest location is not likely to be where the bandicoots were predated by the eagles! That place remains unknown.
