User's notes

Continued from sighting 4407809. Image 1: all 4 birds have retreated to a nearby tree. Image 2: the two males fight again. Images 3 and 4: the second pair return to their original tree (the male's red crest can be seen among the leaves below the hollow), and the original pair retreat to the top of their original stump. Image 5: all 4 birds fly to another tree about 100 m away, where Pair 2 take a higher hollow at upper left and the original pair take one in a broken-off branch at lower right. All this happened over about 15 minutes with much raucous calling throughout. The commotion was still going when I left as the rain started. Sorry about the quality of the pictures, but it seemed worth reporting. I was surprised that the bald male seemed to be the more aggressive, and I wonder if he might have lost his crest in a previous encounter.

Many thanks for the report. I visited the site recently and baldy and mate soon arrived as i showed interest in their hollow. At the time I wondered if there was another bird around so your obs are most interesting. Well worth keeping an eye on the outcome of these interactions. Possibly another pair nesting nearby.
