User's notes

Growing on a dead stump. Seems to have grown around blades of grass. Very stiff and leathery

I suppose there's a faint chance that I'm wrong, but this looks very much like a group of Amauroderma rude fruitbodies, some of which have merged, thereby giving a slightly unusual look overall. Fleshy mushrooms do the bulk of their stem & cap growth by cell expansion from a small button stage. They mostly push aside light obstructions such as grass blades and twigs, though the sticky-capped ones may glue grass blades or twigs to the cap. By contrast, leathery to woody polypores such as Amauroderma develop more slowly by cell addition. Obstacles such as grass blades are not pushed aside. Instead, cells continue to be added on each side of the obstruction which therefore ends up being embedded.

Thanks for the ID and explanation. It was certainly velvety in texture. I couldn’t see a stem, but I’ll go and have a bit closer look.

I’ve added a photo of the stem, it was quite short and velvety brown like the mushroom top. Touching the white underside turned it rusty brown.

Proof positive! Thanks Simone. it was nice to have it at the stage where it still gave a colour change (even if not the bright blood red you see when it's in its prime). Over time the red or rusty brown usually becomes a dark brown.
