This is definitely not Eleocharis acuta, but I don't know what it is (other than a probably sedge).

Probably a sedge is definitely the way to look at it. The inflorescence was long dead by the time I found it anyway. I'll check to see if it comes back later this year as at least in my experience ribwort plantain and African lovegrass tend to outcompete natives plants for roadside verges. Thanks for taking a look anyway :).

This is couch grass, see Pseudolycopodium densum (Bushy Club Moss)
