Larvae protected by sac spiders?

Alison, it would be interesting to see what species this is. You could keep some pupae in a container and rear them out to adults. If you could carefully chisel a slice of bark (with pupae attached) off the tree, it would avoid damaging the pupae.

Thanks Kim. I did try to take some samples but as you said,it seemed to damage the pupae. As the tree is in my front yard I have just gone out and managed to peel off a small piece of bark that has several specimens nestled underneath. Let's hope they reach maturity.

Hi Kim, these larvae have now transformed- 6 January 2021. I've removed some larvae photos to replace with the beetle photos. these little black beetles are also previously identified as unknown lady beetle. at least one is what you previously described as teneral - sighting Coccinellidae sp. (family) (Unidentified lady beetle) so no doubt this same species as it was on the same tree. would some samples of the beetle help to further identify it?
