Its great to get this record from out that way abread111, thanks. I wonder if there are any Rosenberg's Goannas also present in the area. (They rarely venture into trees, have narrower markings on the face and lips, and have pairs of narrow dark lines all the way down to the end of the tail.) Diet of the two species is similar and both nest in Nasutitermes termite mounds, though this Tree Goanna can also nest in arboreal termite nests and can also eat nestling birds and young possums.
Don I don't think there are any Rosenberg's goannas out there. ( I don't live there anymore.) Termite mounds like I've seen here eg on Black Mountain don't occur. Maybe that is a factor. But large lace monitors are not uncommon. The largest I saw was as big as me, but no photo, as before I could get ready to get a pic, it disappeared - probably into a hollow log. Barbara
