Asphodelus fistulosus (onion weed) behind house on Mackenzie St, Hackett in Majura Reserve. This weed species covers an area of approximately 5x5metres. Appears to be contained to this area - removal now would prevent it spreading into the reserve.
Yes - I think we will see more of these species with bulbs, corms etc spreading with La Nina weather. Associate Professor Paul Downey is doing a review of all 500+ naturalised plants in the ACT to measure their risk ratings. In the meantime here is an indicator of risk. a) Victorian advisory list of environmental weeds: occasionally significant, moderately invasive b) Environmental weeds of Australia database: it has been observed to invade relatively undisturbed woodland c) NSW WeedWise: spreads more rapidly in alkaline soils. So it would be advisable to control given proximity to woodland, noting that spread will be slower in ACT soils.
