I suggest this may be Stolotermes victoriensis (Fam Termopsidae). The montane habitat and the fact of it being in a damp rotting fallen tree aligns with this interpretation, as does the morphology of this soldier (cf photos in ALA and descriptions in Watson (1988), "Termites in the Canberra Region".

I agree Harvey. From what I've read, the fellow termopsid Porotermes adamsoni seems to share the same habitat, but soldiers have smaller mandibles.
