Some documented Limacodidae cocoons are shown at http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lima/lima-pupae.html They are inclined to be nearly spherical, and some have a fibrous exterior, but none are covered in detritus like this is. There is a published photo of a Lacturidae cocoon at http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lact/lact-pupae.html which looks more like this. But I am far from convinced it is a Lepidopteran product. Are any spider egg cases or solitary wasp nests for example looking like this?
