Hi Roger, I can't be sure from the photo but this ant gives the impression that it may be Myrmecia pilosula group (a Jumping Jack) rather than M. tarsata. Did you note if the tip of the tail was reddish? Cheers, Jon

Hi John i have added other image, the exposure is blown out some what, there seems to be a ting of yellow to reddish on the tip , see what you think

Hi Roger, thanks for the extra photo. I'm now pretty sure it is M. pilosula group, based on the fine, shortish mandibles, the relatively large eye, the surface sculpturing on the body, the fuzzy pubescence on the gaster and the apparent absence of an obvious red tip on the gaster. Myrmecia tarsata has a greenish iridescence on the body and gaster, which is also very shiny. Cheers, Jon
