User's notes

This follows on from TomT's sighting 4246816 just before. Female nestling was stuck half out of hollow (see Tom's photos, which are the first nestling sighting at this hollow, active for previous two seasons but no nestlings actually seen). Parents flew into tree at dusk. Male chewed bark and fed it to the nestling (photo 1). He then spent several minutes pushing first her head and then her stuck wing back into the hollow (photo 2 shows him pushing her wing). The adult female bobbed up and down on next branch anxiously, with soft calling between them. When the nestling was fully back into the hollow, he went in after her and the adult female flew to the rim. After a few minutes, the male flew off, then the female went right into the hollow, turned and sat looking out (photo 3, adult female in direct centre of photo, very dark and air full of choking smoke).

Thanks Jacky and Tom - an amazing storey that should be written up in the Canberra Bird Notes
