It might be Senecio quadridentatus, though I have never seen it grow in thickets like this, even in burnt areas. How tall was it?

I should have checked my photos to see if they recorded the appearance properly. It is a Cassinia over a metre tall. Not longifolia and flower heads look too robust for qinquefaria.

Sorry Mike, a seniors moment. I meant Cassinia quinquefaria. I agree the heads look too robust, but I do not think there is anything else it could be. If you are worried about it, take it to the Bot Gardens. Betty

On my way back east I noticed some gradation into the more scraggly plants I am more familiar with.
