This female was displaying to the male (out of shot) and proceeded to excavate the hollow. I watched for 10-20min and the female was still excavating when I left. Follow up observations havn't revealed any further activity, although the general area remains a hotspot of Gang-gang activity.
Thanks Roy - I think this tree was the same tree that Rob Spiers observed what he thought was breeding activity about five years ago - so of interest that it may be a repeated nesting site.
Rob replied that "It certainly is the same location, however I’m not sure about the exact tree. The tree was an old Red Gum immediately adjacent to the track north of that water reservoir. Funny, that observation was spring 2010, time gets away.
I haven’t come across any other nests in the lowland areas of the ACT, it’s interesting that the species seems to be successfully nesting in the BGW at Red Hill. I think they would nest around Canberra more if the Sulphur-crested Cockatoos were a little less abundant.
