Moths of Victoria, Part 3, on the supporting CDs for Idaea spp. gives some useful guidelines for distinguishing I. costaria and I. inversata, two similar species, in the field. I. costaria is generally smaller and has a two toned head where the white base of the antennae joins the head, whereas I. inversata is a larger moth and is usually more strongly coloured, and does not have this two-toned feature with basically a black head.and antennae. Both species show a purplish tinge in most specimens, I. inversata more so than I. costaria, While there is not a good view of the head in this specimen there is a slight whitish colouration of the base of the antennae where they join the head which is suggestive of I. costaria. Also I. inversata shows more rounded hindwings, which this specimen does not show. On this basis I am therefore suggesting I. costaria.
