The red dorsal glands on abdominal segments six and seven suggest Lymantriidae,
but it is unlike any in http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lyma/lyma-cats.html
How long is it?
Do you have it in captivity Alison, to rear to an adult moth?

No sorry. The photo was taken back in September on the gum tree in my front yard.

Only 20% of the named Australian moths have known larvae, so most caterpillars can only be identified by rearing them to the adult moth.Amateurs can make a real difference in this regard.

In that case I'll confirm it as White cedar moth.

Thanks. I actually don't usually see the White Cedar moth caterpillars around this late in the year.
