Haha might have to be trusted on this, these are screen shots of a poor phone video using torchlight. This is a small owl of Boobook-like shape and size. I haven't heard it call, but the only other likely candidate - Barking Owl is a bit large compared to this individual. Not a Frogmouth, not an Owlet Nightjar, too small for a Powerful Owl and not a Barn or Masked Owl. Seen twice in two weeks in the woodlands on our property, it's behaving like this is home.
Yes Alice, it could well be a Southern Boobook, the jizz is right. But both the IOC and BLA/HBW taxonomies have the Southern Boobook as Ninox boobook, with Ninox novaeseelandiae being the Morepork/New Zealand Boobook. Chris, what taxonomy is the CNM using for birds please? Clements, perhaps?
Yes a Boobook, I cannot think what else it could be. David, CNM is using the same taxonomy as COG. I am waiting for the new Annotated List before I make any edits to names or taxonomic order
